The Story behind Spoon Rings & Trinkets

connecting the past to the present

I bought my first fork bangle in my twenties and I loved it so much it wasn't long before I was wearing a spoon ring and sugar tong ear rings. When the opportunity to take over a small spoon ring business came my way I jumped at it.

I love to spend time seeking out beautiful pieces of vintage cutlery which I then recycle and refashion into the unique and quirky items you see on these pages. I work from my late father's small workshop using some of his tools - it's the place he could always be found pottering and tinkering around and working here with these beautiful shiny things brings to me a wonderful sense of connection to the past as I work. I often wonder about who would have owned the pieces, how many cups of tea were stirred with this spoon or how many pieces of bread were buttered with that knife.

I hope you enjoy this feeling of connection too, knowing that each item I make is a little piece of someone's personal history.

A Little Piece of History

Spoon rings date back to the 17th Century and to the kitchens of large estates and wealthy landowners.  As the story goes, servants who had fallen in love and wanted to propose marriage would steal silver spoons from their masters’ collection and have them crafted into rings. The servants were too poor to afford any sort of genuine engagement ring, so this was their best alternative to offering a beautiful and valuable ring to the woman they wanted to make their wife.

Hunting around and seeking out my source materials is joyful. All are vintage pieces dating back to at least the 1940's and beyond. I love the idea that each piece holds its own secrets from the lives of the people who would have used it day in, day out. Now you can own, and wear, a little piece of history too!
